The Chronicles of Miros
Azh’rat is a coastal desert land and is one of the few habitable areas for hundreds of miles. One would hold few reasons to travel to the area outside of the business of buying slaves or researching the darker magical arts. The small kingdom is firmly in the grasp of their supreme ruler Szass Tam, a small council of mages and the Black Hands – a group of powerful mages with unknown, but darker, intentions.
Prior to Szass Tam’s elevation to supreme ruler of Azh’rat, the land was ruled by a council of eight powerful mages known as Zulkir, each of whom specialized in a different school of magic. Szass Tam, supported by a group of powerful wizards known as the Black Hands seized power in a devastating civil war, scaring the land with powerful magic and leaving much of the former empire a wasteland. Szass Tam eventually prevailed, naming himself regent and eventually became the one true power in Azh’rat . The Zulkirs now serve as Szass Tam’s vassals.
The nation relies heavily on slavery, and the lives of slaves are held in little regard in Ash’rat. In Azh’rat itself the Zulkirs and other prominent Black Hands rule from their strongholds and estates, using their magic to constantly scheme and plot the domination of their neighbor nations.
